Numerical Simulation of the Impact ofIce Accumulation on a Composite Wind Turbine Blades located in a Cold Climate

The blades of wind turbines placed in cold climate regions are exposed to the risk icing phenomena which impact their lifetimes. This paper proposes a numerical model simulate 50 mm ice thickness localized on tip side horizontal turbine blade, and study its mechanical behavior. blade wasmodeled with finite element method (FEM)in ABAQUS software taking into account aerodynamic, centrifugal inertial loads under conditions service blade.Numerical tests haveevaluated behavior different composite materials compared each other. Damage mode based Hashin criteria was defined. Carbon fibers were considered be most rigid material results thinner, stiffer lighter blades.
